Minnesota Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of 3rd grade. The program places AmeriCorps members as literacy tutors in sites across Minnesota to implement a researched-based early literacy effort to help struggling readers. The Minnesota Reading Corps strategies are designed for both preschool-aged children and K–3rd grade students.

Minnesota Reading Corps Elementary Literacy Tutors serve as one-on-one tutors and provide research-based interventions to students who are just below proficiency in reading. The tutors meet with each student daily for 20 minutes to build phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency skills. Kindergarten tutors work with students in pairs and conduct a group read aloud to help promote comprehension and vocabulary. A Response to Intervention (RtI) model is followed when selecting and monitoring student progress. Tutors work closely with an Internal Coach who is a school staff member on-site. They also work with a Master Coach who is contracted with Minnesota Reading Corps to help support fidelity of interventions.

Elementary Literacy Tutors Elementary Literacy Tutors work one-on-one with K-3 children who need help learning to read. They use prescribed literacy interventions and conduct weekly progress monitoring to ensure their students are on track to read at grade level by the end of third grade. They commit to daytime hours.

During your eleven-month AmeriCorps service, you’ll receive extensive training, support and general professional development opportunities. In addition, you will receive a modest living allowance and receive an education award upon service completion.
